Sunday May 28, 2006

Today was our first real outing with the new Kayaks. We went to Lake Nockamixon in Bucks County. The name Nockamixon comes from the American Indian phrase “nocha-miska-ing” which is Lenni Lenape for “at the place of soft soil.” I wonder how the Lenni Lenape spirits feel about the the fact that in the late 60's early 70's the Army Corp. of Engineers flooded some of the best farm land in Bucks County to create a recreational lake.

Years ago (before children) when we lived in Trumbauersville, we often canoed this lake in the evenings after work. At that time you could still look through the clear water and see the road ways, the tops of the trees and foundations of the farm houses and barns that were raised before the flooding of the valley began to create the lake.

Today we returned and didn't recognize it. The state has developed quite a park facility. And hmmm - now they allow motor boats up to 40 hp. When the lake was first opened to recreation it was limited to canoes, kayaks and sailboats. Well it was still a very enjoyable day, the motorboats were few and only the occasional noise of their motor disrupted the quiet of the lake.
